Looking for a luxury getaway in the bush? Well, look no further. The Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is just three hours drive from Johannesburg and we’re lucky to call it home for our two lodges, Ekuthuleni Lodge and Tshwene Lodge. Here are five reasons why you should visit.
1. Enjoy a chance to see the Big 5
Home to over 50 different mammals, including the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo, wildlife is abundant in the diverse habitat of the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve. You can also expect to see kudu, giraffe, zebra, cheetah, wildebeest and more and keep an eye out at night for some lesser know species like the aardwolf, brown hyena and pangolin. And with approximately 300 bird species to be spotted in this magnificent stretch of bushveld, the Welgevonden is a bird lovers paradise too.
2. Quick and easy access
Welgevonden is one of the most accessible private reserves in South Africa. All it takes is an easy two and half to three hour drive from Johannesburg or a quick 45 minute flight into one of the airstrips on the reserve and you’re ready to begin your African adventure.
3. A personal wildlife experience
The Welgevonden Private Game Reserve houses only a few private safari lodges and thus, when you come across a spectacular wildlife sighting, it’s likely that your game viewing vehicle won’t be interrupted by others. With only a restricted number of vehicles allowed in the park at any one time, and the fact that there is no history of hunting on the land, animals can be rather unfazed by the presence of humans. This means that amazingly close and personal sightings can often be enjoyed.
4. A private bush hideaway
Welgevonden is home to our luxury bush retreats, Ekuthuleni Lodge and Tshwene Lodge. Each lodge is secluded, considerately designed to blend into the surroundings and each accommodates only 10 guests at a time. If you’re a couple looking for a romantic retreat, we would recommend our oasis, Tshwene Lodge. Perched above the rugged valley of the Taaibos River, it offers peace and tranquility for those seeking to get away from it all.
And if you’re travelling to the bush with your family, Ekuthuleni Lodge is a great choice. Guests can relax next to the swimming pool overlooking sweeping, grassy plains and take in a famous African sunset at the end of an adventure-filled day.
5. Endless diversity
The Welgevonden Private Game Reserve covers a staggering 38,200ha of land in the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, Limpopo, South Africa. The pristine beauty of the Waterberg region offers a variety of habitats: riverine scrub, woodland, grassland, fertile valleys and great tracts of water, both above and below ground – a natural paradise for game. Two daily game drives are conducted at each lodge by experienced rangers who will provide intimate details of the abundant flora and fauna, of which many species are unique to the Waterberg.
